I wanted one place to update everything and I didn't want to feel like I had dueling blogs for each of my kiddos. So, please join me at
I am not going to lie if someone asks me a question, but I'm not going to volunteer the information either. Yet, I still feel this desire to over-share, because we could not be happier or more proud of our son and his adoption.

I practiced my non-over-sharing skills at dinner last night. We went out to The Blue Moose, because it is Matt's favorite. The woman at the table next to us asked, "How old is he?"

I replied, "He was a month old yesterday."

She gushed about how cute he is and what mother doesn't love that? Then she said something about all of his dark hair. "I bet it will lighten up just like his big sister's."

Now, if this conversation had happened a couple weeks ago, I probably would have gone on about his adoption, but I didn't. I said, "Well, her hair started out that light. His will probably stay dark." Matt has dark hair, so it is conceivable that the dark hair came from him.

Whew. That wasn't so hard. We finished up our dinner and headed to the car. Every stranger we meet doesn't have to know that Jayvan is adopted. It's obvious that he is a loved member of our family.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04607499475225033314noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5603590110635547134.post-83960434650422119662011-08-05T16:29:00.000-05:002011-08-05T16:29:17.523-05:00Post-Placement Legal FunWe already knew that Virginia required three post-placement visits. We found out last night that the first of those visits has to happen within thirty days of placement. Jayvan was placed with us on July 8, so that means we have to have this visit within the next four days. The only time our social worker had was at noon tomorrow. Lexi's birthday party is at 2:00, but we will make this work.

We also found out that we cannot petition the court for finalization until six months after placement and it typically takes four to six weeks to get a court date. So, it looks like our adoption finalization until February or March.

Now, I need to get off of this computer so I can clean and prepare thirty giftbags for Lexi's party. Whew.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04607499475225033314noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5603590110635547134.post-39527222546242500182011-08-04T14:15:00.002-05:002011-08-05T16:18:13.833-05:00

I can't believe the time has flown so quickly, yet he feels like he's been a part of our family for so long. I find myself being more joyful than I have ever been in my life. So many people have told me that I have that new mom glow even though I don't have the postpartum hormones to blame it on. Jayvan came to visit me in the office for a bit this morning. My camera is still being repaired, so here are some lovely webcam shots for you.
He is a happy boy as long as you aren't bathing him or changing him. We cannot believe how blessed we are.

A lot of people have asked about our contact with the birthfamily. We talk to them and skype with them every few days. We have left it totally up to them. Jayvan's birthmom (B) has had some health issues and we would appreciate any and all prayers for her. She is a wonderful woman and we want her to be healthy and happy. We cannot imagine a better relationship with the birthfamily and we hope to see it only grow and develop more deeply. As Matt said, "We went to Virginia to get a baby, and we ended up getting an extended family."

Four weeks. . . wow.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04607499475225033314noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5603590110635547134.post-67770665280751673252011-08-01T09:34:00.002-05:002011-08-01T10:54:56.565-05:00My Least Favorite Adoption Conversation to DateI want to preface this post by saying that we have been surrounded by overwhelming support and understanding. Even the conversation I'm about to type out was not born out of maliciousness, but rather (for lack of a nicer word) ignorance. I remember reading about conversations like this in adoption books and blogs, and now I got to experience one for myself.

Today while we were in church, Jayvan needed a diaper change, so I took him to the bathroom. While I was in there, a woman came into the bathroom and the following conversation ensued.

Random Church Lady (RCL): Oh! There is someone in here. I was coming to check for the cleaning person.
Me: I'm just finishing up. I'll be out in a minute.
RCL: Oh, you have a little baby. He's so adorable.
Me: Thank you. We think he's pretty cute.
RCL: Can I hold him?
(She came at me with out-stretched arms and I somehow couldn't say no, so I handed my precious baby to a lady I've never met.)
RCL: Is he. . . ?
(Somehow I knew what she was asking.)
Me: He is adopted.
RCL: Oh, I just knew it. I could just tell.
(She was quite proud of herself.)
Me: Yes, we are pretty blessed.
RCL: Oh, I want my son to get one of these. I'm going to go show him.
(Get one? These? That's not really how it works. At this point she proceeds out of the bathroom with my baby. Her son is standing outside the bathroom with gloves on. Apparently he is the cleaning person.)
RCL: See son! This is what I want you to get. It doesn't matter if you're single. You can still get one of these.
(Seriously, get one? I still tried to be nice.)
Me: The adoption process can be hard, but it is so worth it.
RCL: So, where did you get him?
Me: We traveled to Virginia for his birth.
RCL: But where did you get him from?
Me: Virginia.
(She stares at me blankly)
Me: He was born in Virginia and we traveled there to pick him up.
RCL: But what nationality is he?
(Now this is where the old snarky Amanda would have said "American!" However, I knew what she was getting at.)
Me: He is biracial, half Caucasian and half African American.
RCL: Oh, I never had one of those. . . :?
(She then proceeds to tell me about all of the foster children she had and all of their "nationalities." You would think a former foster-mom would be a little more politically correct.)
RCL: So is he your only child?
Me: No, my daughter is almost five.
RCL: Is she adopted too?
Me: No.
RCL: Oh, so she is really yours.
(Yep, she said it.)
Me: She is biologically ours, yes. Both of our children are ours. Well, I've got to get back into church. . .
(And I make my escape.)

Eesh. When I told Matt about the whole thing, he said he definitely would have said, "Full-blooded American" and walked away. I probably should have gone with that. I'll be in prayer about how to handle conversations like this in the future.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04607499475225033314noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5603590110635547134.post-41522047679793908492011-07-28T13:09:00.000-05:002011-07-28T13:09:17.991-05:00Happy Baby BoyJayvan smiles in his sleep. I still have not been able to capture the complete smile, but this is a partial smile.
These three weeks of his life have been filled with so many people wanting to meet him and show him how much they love him. He is surrounded by love. Even when he wants to stay up from 2:00-4:00am, I still whisper in his ear, "I love you little man." I love sleep too, but I love that little face a thousand times more.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04607499475225033314noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5603590110635547134.post-6297338986139610442011-07-21T10:29:00.002-05:002011-07-28T15:22:38.889-05:00Mommy's Rock Star

Here's the list:

God is so good and we are so incredibly blessed.

I break out in random tears when I think about all that has happened in our lives in the last month.

Jayvan sleeps through our dogs' barks and I am thankful.

Lexi makes some of the best pretend coffee and pizza that I've ever had.

Green Mountain Coconut coffee is delicious.

Jayvan slept for five hours straight last night and it felt like a lot longer. I am refreshed.

Suitcases don't unpack themselves.

Laundry doesn't fold itself either.

I don't really care about it right now. . .

My family is amazing and we are so blessed with the outpouring of love we have received.

My love of babywearing was reaffirmed by my inability to make coffee one-handed.

I'm a crier.

As of 12:00 am this morning, Jayvan's adoption is no longer a "legal risk." I stayed up until that time because I couldn't sleep until I saw the clock hit 12:01. Our revocation period is over and honestly that is probably why I slept better last night. Praise God from whom all blessing flow!

Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04607499475225033314noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5603590110635547134.post-26496159192163868992011-07-18T08:16:00.000-05:002011-07-18T08:16:33.821-05:00Heading HomeToday we are heading home on a 12:28 (Eastern) flight. We pray for safe travels and a wonderful first flight for Mr. Jayvan. (I can already hear the groans of the other passengers when I walk on board with an infant and a four-year-old. Ha!)Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04607499475225033314noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5603590110635547134.post-70629118635097380062011-07-17T09:48:00.000-05:002011-07-17T09:48:17.696-05:00ICPC & GoodbyesWe got the call on Friday that Kansas had cleared us and we were legal to go home. That was such a weight off of our shoulders. Hotel (even extended stay) living with a newborn is less than ideal. Yet, I hadn't thought about the impact this news would have on B. When we told her, she left the room and didn't come back for quite a while. This was the strike of reality that she had been hoping would never come. She told me that she secretly wished that we would never be approved to leave Virginia. Yet, she knew that was unrealistic.

I started wondering if our open relationship was making this harder for her, and in some ways I think it is. If this were a closed or semi-open relationship, we would not have seen her several times over the last week. While this obviously prolonged the goodbye, I know it has to help too. She has seen Jayvan several times and she knows that we are taking wonderful care of this little boy.

So, today we are taking lunch over to their house and having our last goodbyes. I imagine there will be a lot of tears (probably mostly from me), but the pain is worth it.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04607499475225033314noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5603590110635547134.post-91245131228106899342011-07-15T09:05:00.000-05:002011-07-15T09:05:31.188-05:00First BBQNo, he didn't eat anything, but Jayvan attended his first poolside BBQ at our hotel last night.
Perhaps God knew that I needed to spend my time with my snoozing baby boy and his first family instead of updating my blog. I'm going to try to just get the timeline down a little bit here, and I'll maybe come add some details when time allows.

We got the call on Tuesday night (July 5) that the birth mom (B) was in labor and heading to the hospital. The first flight that we could get was at 5:30 the next morning so we booked it and packed. Neither Matt or I could sleep all night and my mom came up to stay with Lexi. We talked to B several more times and she was definitely in active labor and in pain. Her mother-in-law (RG) called us with updates when she could.

We made it to our layover in Atlanta (there were no direct flights unfortunately) and talked to B. She was dilated to a 7 and she had an epidural to help with her pain. She sounded much better than she did when we talked to her earlier. About 15 minutes after that call, RG called to tell me that the baby was born at 9:22 am (eastern). I cried in the middle of the airport as RG reported he had a head full of black hair and everyone was healthy.

Our flight landed in Norfolk at 12:00pm and we were at the hospital by 1:00. When we got there, B was in the room alone, so we sat and chatted for a while. Then she offered to call the nursery for the baby. They wheeled the baby down the hall and I held my breath and the nurse wheeled him into the room.
We met our son for the very first time and we immediately fell in love. He is gorgeous and I'm not just saying that because I'm his mom. We spent the whole afternoon and evening taking care of the baby who was not yet named. He was immediately loved by all of our friends and family who saw his gorgeous pictures through the wonder of facebook and skype.

We spent time that evening with B and played Phase 10 in her hospital room that night. It was a quiet evening that allowed us to really get to know her a bit more.

The next morning, the birthdad (R) came back to the hospital. He had been at the birth and cut the cord, but I think his emotions got the best of him and he needed to go home. We met more of the birth family and spent some time getting to know each other. Before he got there, B asked us if we would consider giving the baby two middle names and we agreed that it was a great idea. When R got to the hospital, we all agreed upon the perfect name:

Jayvan Edward Grant Dunn

Javan was the name that Matt and I had chosen and we agreed that the "y" would help people pronounce the name correctly and B happens to love "y's" in names. Edward was Matt's grandpa's name, and everyone in our family has a family middle name. Grant is the family name of R and we thought it only fitting that Jayvan have a family name from each of his families.

At 12:30, the social worker from The Datz Foundation came with a notary for us to sign all of the papers. I knew this would be an emotional time, and R's family showed up just in time to distract us from the emotions. The papers were signed and we spent the rest of Thursday getting to know R and B a little more while we shared in the care of Jayvan.

On Friday morning, we were told we would be able to leave the hospital and I was so ready to be out of there (I am not a hospital person). We were finally able to leave in the early afternoon. We all walked out together with the baby (hospital policy required B to carry the baby, but R actually carried him). We gave B & R a ride to run a quick errand and then we took them home. We spent a little time with their family and then we made it across town to our extended stay hotel.

Shortly after settling into the hotel and eating dinner, it was time to pick up Nana and Lexi at the airport. I will count the moment that I held both of my children in my arms as one of the happiest moments in my life.
We spent Saturday morning getting the hang of a morning routine and then we went out the the birthfamily's home. We went to a local park that overlooks Chesapeake Bay and let the kids run around the playground.
Baby Jay has a pediatrician's appointment tomorrow and we plan to have pizza with R & B tomorrow. We never really could plan what this open adoption would look like, but we are learning as we go.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04607499475225033314noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5603590110635547134.post-32900549943929800002011-07-07T15:23:00.001-05:002011-07-07T15:23:37.367-05:00Introducing Baby Jayvan

Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04607499475225033314noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5603590110635547134.post-18831718334146233212011-07-06T04:21:00.001-05:002011-07-06T04:21:12.856-05:00Baby is on his way!

Emom called around 10:30 and told me that her contractions were getting stronger and only five minutes apart. We wondered if the contractions would stop after she got to the hospital again, but this time baby boy is serious about making his entrance. As I type this Matt is driving us to the airport. I'm praying for a healthy delivery and selfishly hoping that we make it there in time.

E-mom just called to say her contractions are 8 minutes apart and she may be leaking fluid. She asked what I wanted her to do and I told her to head to the hospital. I am excited and a little sad because we were planning to be in the room to support e-mom and be the first to hold the baby (e-mom's wishes and ours). The earliest we can possibly get there is 11:45 tomorrow morning and I just cannot wish a long labor on e-mom.

I'll update here when I find out more. Now I'm off to frantically pack.Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04607499475225033314noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5603590110635547134.post-84730007692037016692011-07-02T09:48:00.001-05:002011-07-02T10:00:39.067-05:00Look who we got to snuggle with yesterday.
Well, you can see most of his adorable little face anyway.
I was getting about an ounce a day, and then I ran out of domperidone. My supply went down to basically nothing. I went to my doctor and asked if he would write a prescription so I could order it quicker from Canada, and he would not write the prescription.

So, I ordered from overseas and it took about 3 weeks for me to get it. I actually got my new shipment on the day we got the call about our match. What timing!

So, I started meds again about two weeks ago now and I'm getting a little more milk each day. Right now, about three days worth of pumping equals one ounce, but I'm expecting that to improve. I am pumping as frequently as I can, but the ideal would be to pump every three hours (or so I've been told).

My pump also let me down (and not in the good way). Apparently if the diaphragm cracks on a Medela Pump in Style, your pump is dead. Sad. So, I've rented a hospital pump for $55 a month. A friend mailed her pump to me as well and I just got it yesterday. I'm hoping it still has some life left in it.

Just because blog posts are more interesting with pictures, here is what I take everyday. This is just my "regular" vitamins: a multivitamin, Mammary PMG (a supplement for breast health), Prolamine Iodine, Chlorella, Calcium/Magnesium/D3, and Krill oil.
If you saw these for 50% off, you couldn't pass them up either.
